Controller – Insurance Brokerage Sector
Location: Remote (Candidates must reside in EST or CST time zones)
Compensation: $140,000 – $150,000 base + bonus + potential equity
Overview
The HT Group has partnered with a growing, PE-backed, independent insurance brokerage in their search for a highly strategic and hands-on Controller to lead and oversee all financial operations. This role will be responsible for all aspects of the accounting cycle: month-end close, financial reporting, cash management, and supporting executive leadership with data-driven insights, especially in an acquisition-driven environment.
This is a fully remote role, requiring availability during Eastern or Central time zone business hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee all company financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency
- Manage month-end close cycle and all aspects of the accounting department (e.g., AR/AP, annual audit process, validating debt covenant compliance)
- Analyze financial performance, trends, and key business drivers to support strategic decision-making
- Oversee cash flow management and ensure operational liquidity
- Evaluate and optimize capital structure and financial strategies
- Support M&A activity, primarily focused on post-acquisition integration support
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Prepare and present financial reports to executive leadership
- Manage and mentor a small accounting/finance team
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations and Executive Leadership
- Assist with corporate tax oversight and coordination with external partners
- Reconcile financials across partnerships and entities
- Manage monthly commission calculations and ensure timely payments to agents
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Controller, Director of Accounting, or similar senior accounting role within the insurance brokerage industry
- Strong understanding of the month-end close process, insurance industry accounting principles, and how to create financial reporting packages
- Experience in forecasting, budgeting, and data analysis
- Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a growing organization
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- High attention to detail with strong analytical capabilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (advanced Excel required)
- Experience with Applied Epic or insurance systems is required
- Experience with NetSuite ERP is preferred
- Insurance brokerage industry experience required
- Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) integration experience is a plus
