Senior Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Round Rock, TX (Austin Area)
Travel: 0–10%
Experience: 7+ years preferred
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Senior Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, and automate infrastructure supporting the development, testing, integration, and delivery of enterprise software products.
This is a senior individual contributor role requiring deep expertise in Terraform, Kubernetes, Linux, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD, and infrastructure automation.
The ideal candidate has experience building infrastructure from the ground up across public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises environments. You will establish scalable, repeatable infrastructure standards and automated deployment processes that enable software engineering teams to develop, test, package, and release products efficiently.
Unlike traditional cloud operations roles, this position focuses on engineering the infrastructure that enables software delivery, rather than managing customer production environments.
Our software products are deployed into customer-owned environments, making portability, security, automation, and cloud-independent architecture essential.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Engineering & Automation
- Design, build, and maintain infrastructure supporting internal software development, integration, QA, release-candidate testing, and demonstration environments.
- Develop reusable, declarative, and idempotent Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform.
- Establish infrastructure standards, reusable modules, automated provisioning, and configuration management practices.
- Build infrastructure capable of operating across public cloud, private cloud, virtualized, and on-premises environments.
- Design infrastructure solutions that minimize reliance on proprietary cloud-managed services.
- Implement secure networking, storage, compute, identity, and access controls.
Kubernetes & Container Platforms
- Design, provision, configure, and maintain Kubernetes clusters from the ground up.
- Engineer Kubernetes networking, persistent storage, security, ingress, and cluster lifecycle management.
- Automate Kubernetes infrastructure deployment and configuration using Terraform, Helm, Ansible, and related technologies.
- Support containerized application environments across different infrastructure platforms.
- Develop portable Kubernetes deployment patterns that can be reproduced in customer-owned environments.
- Troubleshoot complex Kubernetes, Linux, networking, and infrastructure issues.
CI/CD, DevOps & Release Engineering
- Design, build, and optimize CI/CD pipelines supporting software development, testing, and release processes.
- Implement automated infrastructure provisioning, build validation, testing, and deployment workflows.
- Establish repeatable processes for development, QA, integration, and release-candidate environments.
- Implement GitOps and infrastructure automation practices to improve consistency and reliability.
- Partner with software engineers to streamline container builds, dependency management, and release packaging.
- Help create self-contained software deployment packages that can be installed into customer-managed environments.
- Support automated software releases across cloud, on-premises, and potentially disconnected environments.
Security, Reliability & Engineering Standards
- Integrate infrastructure security, vulnerability management, secrets management, and access controls into automated workflows.
- Apply secure configuration standards across Linux, Kubernetes, networking, and cloud infrastructure.
- Design reliable, reproducible infrastructure with appropriate monitoring, logging, and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Develop documentation, deployment procedures, reusable templates, and infrastructure best practices.
- Collaborate with software engineering, security, QA, and product teams to improve software delivery efficiency.
- Independently evaluate infrastructure technologies and recommend practical engineering solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional experience in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, platform engineering, cloud engineering, or related disciplines.
- Strong hands-on experience with Terraform, including reusable modules, automated provisioning, and Infrastructure-as-Code best practices.
- Demonstrated experience building and configuring Kubernetes clusters, beyond deploying applications into existing clusters.
- Strong Linux systems administration and troubleshooting experience.
- Experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms.
- Experience with container technologies, including Docker or Podman, Kubernetes, and Helm.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
- Working knowledge of networking, DNS, routing, load balancing, firewalls, storage, and infrastructure security.
- Experience with at least one major cloud platform, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Experience building infrastructure from the ground up and independently solving complex technical challenges.
- Strong communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with OpenStack, private cloud, VMware, or bare-metal infrastructure.
- Experience building Kubernetes clusters outside managed cloud services such as EKS, AKS, or GKE.
- Experience supporting hybrid cloud or cloud-agnostic infrastructure architectures.
- Familiarity with GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux.
- Experience with Ansible or other configuration management tools.
- Experience packaging and deploying containerized software into customer-owned infrastructure.
- Experience with air-gapped, disconnected, restricted-network, or classified environments.
- Familiarity with Zarf or similar tools for packaging and deploying Kubernetes applications into disconnected environments.
- Experience with secure software delivery, container registries, artifact repositories, and dependency management.
- Experience supporting defense, government, or highly regulated technology environments.
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
The ideal candidate is a builder who enjoys creating infrastructure rather than simply maintaining existing environments.
You will thrive in this position if you:
- Have personally built Kubernetes and infrastructure environments from scratch.
- Enjoy writing Terraform, automation scripts, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Understand both traditional infrastructure and modern cloud-native technologies.
- Can engineer solutions that operate outside AWS, Azure, or GCP managed services.
- Have experience creating repeatable infrastructure and software delivery processes.
- Are comfortable making independent technical decisions in a greenfield environment.
- Prefer hands-on engineering over primarily architectural or management responsibilities.
- Enjoy enabling software developers to build, test, and release products more efficiently.
Why This Opportunity?
This position offers the opportunity to establish and influence the infrastructure engineering foundation for software products deployed into complex customer environments.
You will have significant technical ownership, work with modern infrastructure technologies, and help define how development, testing, and software releases are automated and delivered.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior infrastructure engineer who enjoys Terraform, Kubernetes, Linux, automation, and solving challenging infrastructure problems across multiple deployment environments.
