This role is a contract opportunity and located in downtown Austin. Will need to be onsite 3-4 days per week.
Overview
Our client is seeking a Technical Writer to help document and standardize IT processes, procedures, and technical environments. The organization is currently assessing its technology landscape and identifying opportunities to strengthen foundational processes and documentation.
This person will work closely with IT leadership and technical subject matter experts to gather information, understand current-state processes, identify documentation gaps, and turn technical knowledge into clear, organized, and usable documentation.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an environment where processes may not already be well defined. They should be able to ask the right questions, gather information from multiple stakeholders, and create structure from information that may currently live primarily with individual team members.
Responsibilities
- Partner with IT leadership, engineers, administrators, and other subject matter experts to understand existing technical processes and workflows.
- Document current-state IT processes, procedures, systems, and operational practices.
- Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), process documentation, runbooks, knowledge-base articles, and other technical materials.
- Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and outdated information within existing documentation.
- Translate complex technical information into clear, concise documentation that can be easily understood and followed.
- Organize documentation so information is consistent, accessible, and easy to maintain.
- Facilitate working sessions and interviews with technical teams to capture processes and institutional knowledge.
- Develop documentation standards and templates to create consistency across the IT organization.
- Update documentation as processes and technology environments evolve.
- Support broader IT improvement initiatives as additional documentation needs are identified.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Technical Writer, preferably supporting IT, infrastructure, software, or technology organizations.
- Strong experience developing SOPs, process documentation, runbooks, knowledge-base content, and technical procedures.
- Ability to understand technical concepts and translate them into clear documentation for different audiences.
- Strong interviewing and information-gathering skills with the ability to work directly with technical subject matter experts.
- Comfortable entering an environment where processes and documentation may be incomplete or still being defined.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple documentation priorities, and bring structure to ambiguous situations.
- Experience with common documentation, knowledge-management, and collaboration platforms is preferred.
Ideal Profile
This person will be most successful if they are naturally curious, organized, and comfortable asking questions. They should be able to take loosely defined or undocumented processes, understand how they work in practice, and turn that information into clear and repeatable documentation. This is a hands-on role for someone who can bring organization and structure to a technology environment that is actively being assessed and improved.
